WELLINGTON CLUB. The first game in tho return ladder match for rung 2 between W- E. Mason, challenger, and W. McKay, defender, was commenced on Wednesday evening and concluded on Saturday. It was splendidly contested, and some fine play was seen on both sides, especially aftor Mason sacrificed two pawns for positional advantage, which ultimately yielded him a win at the 75th move. Tho ending was a vehy instructive one. The second game is set down for decision on Wednesday. Visitors to the club last week included Mr E. H. Severne, president of the Canterbury Chess Club, and A. W. Gyles, of Westport, two players who wore prominent prize-winners at the Championship Congress held at Nelson last Christmas. They both: intend to compete at the Auckland Congress nest Christmas, and their present form augurs well for further success. WORKING MEN’S CLUB. This club’s annual handicap chess tourney was advanced a further stage last week, when Jensen won from Wild, Burgess from C. Reid, and Kelling from Wright. The position of the leaders is now as follows :

A draughts match was played on Tuesday evening at the rooms of the Working Men’s Club between tho home team and the Watersldors’ Club. Mr j. McNee (president) extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and voiced the pleasure of members at the revival of this fixture, which was allowed to fall into abeyance a few years ago. Mr E. Butler, (bon, secretary) responded on behalf of tho Watersiders, who annexed tho honours of, the evening. Gyles, hori. secretary of the Westport Chess and Draughts Club, called at the Working Men’s Club on Saturday to ascertain whether its draughts players would bfc pro pared to play a ton-a-sido match by correspondence with the Westport Club. The local players, of - whom several were present, received the proposal very favourably, and' it , ij expected that the match will be arranged to commence at an early date. The Westport Club, always strong, has lately been further strengthened by the transfer from Gore to'Westport of Mr James Gardiner, tho present Australasian champion.
