STRYCHNINE IN TEA
ALLEGED MURDER CONSPIRACY. MELBOURNE, June 16. Two young women, Clarice Cowell and Elizabeth Barry, were remanded in custody on a charge of conspiring to murder a Mrs King by placing strychnine in her tea. • The police evidence showed that Barry called on Mrs King, representing herself as a friend of the brother of King. She was ashed to have a cup of tea. After the tea had been made, Mrs King left the room, and on returning sipped tho beverage. Discerning a peculiar taste she did not drink it. She examined it after Barry had left, and found it contained sufficient strychnine to kill ten people. AVhon arrested, Barry made a statement that she and Cowell had conspired to poison Mrs King. Cowell first denied this, but subsequently confirmed Barry’s statement, and added that King had cruelly treated and ruined her, and that she wished to get rid of Mrs King.
