THE NEW SPEAKER

•‘PICKED” BY DR NEWMAN, M.P. During his address to the Wellington East electors last night. Dr Newman, M.P., referring to the question of a new Speaker, said that the newspapers had been speculating a good deal on this, subject, but he could pick the name of Sir Arthur Guinness’s successor at one hit, and his name would be Lang. (Applause.) Mr Lang bad made an excellent Chairman of Committees, getting through the business quickly. Ho was very courteous and very firm, and he (Dr Newman) could not think of anyone better fitted to fill tbe position than Mr Lang. Somo of the speculations, declared Dr Newman, had been very absurd.
