ALLEGED FRAUDS

CHARGES AGAINST A SOLICITOR, (Received May 28, 9*30 p.m.) LONDON, May 28. Arthur Newton, the well-known solicitor, has been acquitted on the charge of misappropriating £3OO. On March. 22nd it was reported that Arthur Newton, the well-known solicitor, and Berkeley Bennett, an undischarged bankrupt, of Half-moon street, charged with defrauding Hans Thorech of £23,000, had been committed for trial. Newtown was further charged with misappropriating the sum of £3OO m connection with the fine of £SOO imposed in January last on Koy Mackay, vjho, with othere, was convicted for keeping a gambling house in Belgxaye square. When the case was called on rn the Police Court on March Ist last, tbo defence declared that the prosecution arose out of a civil judgment, and that the prosecutor had offered a compromise. Thorsch gave evidence that he was indued to invest £14,000 in Manchurian Concessions. Ltd. He had not received y return. Subsequently Newton and others persuaded him to invest £16.000 in alleged land and timber concessions in Canada.
