IN THE HOMELAND
NEW ZEALANDERS ON TOUR. LONDON, January 16. Mr M. M. MoCallum, of Remuera, Auckland, leaves for New Zealand on March 17th. Mr and Mrs Bvored, of Waihi, are staying ft 8, West Heath avenue, Hampstead. Mrs M. M. Mudge and Miss’Alison Mudge, of Auckland, return by the Orama, sailing on February 14th. Mr George Kay, of Kawa, is visiting England, his address being Bennington Hotel, Southampton row. Mr Daniel McGill, of Wellington, who came over to England six months ago, in connection with a process of his own invention,* for the conversion of flax into cotton, returns to Wellington by the Ruahiuo on the 18th. Miss G. Freeman, 8.A., of Christchurch, who has been in London since last July, sails for New Zealand on the 20th. Mrs Cross, who came over .with Miss Freeman, is now on the Continent, and will join the same boat later. , , Mr Arthur G. Dean, of Lincoln, Canterbury, is in England until the end of March. His address is Chillington, Fillcroombe road, Sutton, Surrey. Mr John Robinson, of Canterbury, is making a visit to the United Kingdom after many years’ absence. He will shortly return to the Dominion. Mrs Ryder (wife of Colonel R. H. Ryder, of the Waikato), who came to England by the Arawa recently, returns by the Ruahino. Miss Ethel M. Standish, of New Plymouth, is in England on a short visit. Lieutenant-Engineer Ponsonby McKenzie has been appointed by the Admiralty, Inspector of Coal, stationed at the Westport coal mines—a three years’ appointment—and proceeds to New Zealand almost immediately. Mr Ormsby G. .R. Baines, who obtained a commission in the regular forces (Queen’s Own, Dublin), from the New Zealand Territorials last year, is nefiv on leave. Ho spent a short time in Cheltenham as the guest of a relative there (Colonel Atkinson), and is now on a short visit to Paris. Before returning to his regiment ha will make inquiries at Farnborough about entering the Royal Flying Corps (military wing). Since his arrival, some weeks ago, Mr Percival H. Powell, Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Canterbury College, has visited the laboratories of the University at Liverpool, the Westinghouse Works at Manchester, where there are two New Zealanders (Messrs Jones and Beamish), one of whom is an old Canterbury student, Sheffield, the Battersea Polytechnic, National Physical Laboratory,, the South Kensington Museum, etc. Af the Siemens Bros.’ Works, in Stafford, Mr Powell found two more old students of Canterbury College (Messrs De Renzy and Owen) gaining expedience.
