DO EXPERIMENTAL FARMS PAY?
A .FARMER'S OPINION A recent visitor to one of the State farms meets the statements of critics who argue that the Government experimental stations should show a direct cash profit, with the following statement; . “They seem to lose sight of the work that is being done, that could never be undertaken by the private owner, and the wealth that must ovenutally accrue to New Zealand when the farmers profit by the discoveries made at Buakura and the other farms; of the saving that will be made by the farmers when the work at these farms will show them the uselessness of certain manures on certain soils, and the benefit of others and so prevent unroproductive expenditure. '“lf the balance at Ruakura, or at ALMim.-ihn.ki, or at Levin, is on • the wrong side of the ledger, the balance for the farming community, and tor Now Zealand generally, will in a few years be an enormous one on the right side of the ledger, even if nothing more wore done than the evolution or the rust-proof oat and the introduction of lucerne.” * ,
