Regarding the waterside strike the union members say no communication has been received from the federation executive, and do not- believe the executive have met to consider the question as telegraphed from Auckland yesterday. CHRISTCHURCH, December 4. , The disengaged 'waterside workers held a meeting at Lyttelton this morning to hear Mr Gould, the secretary of the Timaru Waterside Workers' Union, in explanation of the strike there. The meeting carried a resolution approving the action of the Timaru Union, and urging the Federation of Labor to take the matter in hand. MASTERTON, December 4. The triennial Wellington District Conference of Foresters opened here to-day. The whole day was occupied in discussion of a proposal for consolidation of the sick and funeral funds, which was eventually thrown out by a small majority. Delegates were entertained at a banquet tonight. . NELSON, December 4. The Nelson Harbor, Board decided' to take a poll of ratepayers on a proposal to carry out the works recommended by Mr R. W. Holmes, engineer-in-chief to the Marine Department, at a cost of about JEIO,OOO, to improve the harbor by dredging, and widening the entrance to enable the port to be worked freely by larger ocean liners. AUCKLAND, December 4. Owing to the still increasing cost of hides, which are now stated to be selling at phenomenal prices, the New Zealand Tanners Association resolved to-day to advance the price of leather by one penny per pound and one shilling and sixpence per side, and one half-penny per foot for chromes.
