MELBOURNE, October 26. The Navigation Bill has been read a third time in the House of Representatives. LORD CHELMSFORD’S RETIREMENT. SYDNEY, October 26. Lord Chelmsford, the State Governor, has confirmed the report ■ that ho is retiring from the Governorship for purely family reasons. He has a sixteen-year-old son at school in England, who in a couple of years would have to take up a profession, and he (Lord Chelmsford) did not want him to be able to say in future years, if anything went wrong, that he had been loft without care at the most critical time. Lord Chelmsford and the Ministry mutually regret the necessity for the decision. ME WADE’S HOLIDAY. SYDNEY, October 26. Mr C. G. Wade, the leader of the Opposition in the State Parliament, who is in an indifferent state of health, and his wife are leaving on an extended tour through China and Japan. NEW SOUTH WALES FINANCE. SYDNEY, October 26. Mr J. H. Cann, State Treasurer, has announced that, £4,750,000 of Treasury deficiency bills have now been wiped out by means of' surplus revenue. SYDNEY WHARFAGE ACCOMMODATION. SYDNEY, October 26. Merchants strongly complain of the lack of wharfage accommodation in Sydney, stating that trade _is badly hampered and shipping seriously delayed. MODERN FASHIONS ARRAIGNED. SYDNEY, October 26. At Vie women’s, session of the Congregational Union feminine dress was warmly criticised. One speaker declared that many women were too anxious seeking pleasure to look young —their chief desire—but many women at that gathering were growing younger with passing years. Another speaker asked why was it that modern women seemed to find it easy to put off modesty when she put on her clothes. FRUITGROWERS’ CONFERENCE. MELBOURNE, October 26. The Fruitgrowers’ Conference has concluded. Mr McKee was appointed the New Zealand representative. A resolution was passed in favor of appealing to the growers of Australasia to form % combine for their mutual benefit.
