Mr B. D. Hoben. late editor of the "Manawatu Times, was entertained at a farewell gathering at Palmoreton last evening by a number of prominent citizens, the Mayor presiding. Mr Hoben leaves to take over the editorship of the Christchurch "Nows" on Saturday. The Mayor described him as a man of groat energy, and said he had been prominent In all important movements having for their object the advancement of the district. He regretted Mr Hoben’o departure, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Messrs John Stevens (ox-M.P.), C. Loughnan, C. Naylor, R. B. Abraham. F. J. Nathan. Captain Prcoco, W. L. Fitehorbert, I>r Martin, B. Drew, J. L. Barnicoat, W. Park, and others spoke, describing Mr Hoben as a man who expressed his opinions in his writings, and had advocated what he thought for the good of tho district. They wished him every success in tho future. Mr Hoben having replied, tho toast of tho guest and Mrs Hoben was drunk with musical honors.

A Press Association mestaga states that a private cablegram was received in Christchurch yesterday by Messrs Gould, Beaumont and 00.. conveying news of the sudden death in London ot Mr Joseph Gould, well known in business circles in Christchurch. Death occurred at Mr Gould’s London residence, Cadogan plaoo, on October 22nd, from heart trouble. The news came os a shock to many friends in Christchurch. Mr Gould was tho eldest son of Mr George Gould, who came to Christchurch from Auckland ia 1851. Mr Joseph Gould Was bora here in limit and received his education at .Christ’s College. In order to acquire business training and experience he entered the office of an important firm of colonial merchants in London, and on returning to New Zealand became secretary of the New Zealand Shipping Company, which had then only recently been formed. In the year 1878 ho left the service of the shipping company, and with Mr John Lewis founded the firm of Lewie and Gould. Mr Lewis retired some time later, and Mr John Beaumont joined the dm, which, acquired then tho name since retained — Gould, Beaumont and 00. The deceased married an Edinburgh lady, and in IW4 he severed his connection with the firm and loft Now Zealand to take Up permanent residence in England. Ho still took interest in New Zealand, however, and visited the Dominion several times since 1901. Mr Gould was closely identified with a number of important commercial enterprises in tho city and In the Dominion. He was a director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and held office on both the local board and the London board. Ho was also a director of tho Christchurch “Press" Company, tho Christchurch Gas Company, and the Permanent Investment and Loan Society. Ho took keen interest in matters affecting the agricultural and pastoral welfare of the province, and was for some time president of the Canterbury A. and P. Society. His principal recreation was game shooting. Sr Gould was the principal owner of the Sherwood Downs estate. South Santerbury,- which was acquired by the Government last year for closer settlement.
