RAILWAY DISMISSALS
MINISTER’S REPLY TO LABOR COUNCIL. FBXSS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, August 5. Some weeks ago the Southland District Labor Council wrote to the Minister for Railways alleging that several married men had been dismissed from the maintenance branch of. the railways, and contending that they shou<\ have received preference over single men whoso services were retained. At a meeting of the Labor Council on Saturday night the following letter from the Hon. W. H, Herries was .read:— .. “With reference to your letter re the paying-off -of -railway hands at Invercargill, I have the honour-to-inform you that, one of the conditions governing the agreement between the department and the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants is that the. department' shall recognise no other* union, or body in connection ' with matters- appertaining to men in the railway employment. In these circumstances I regret that I cannot, discuss the question-with your council. If the men referred to in your letter are not members of tho .Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants they should *?present their grievance through their foreman.”'. ...
The council objected to the Minister’s attitude, and decided to publish the letter.
