FOOTBALL.
TO-DAY’S FIXTURES. At Athletic Park this afternoon the North Island country and South Island country {jams meet after having completed a tour respectively of and North Islands. In these tours the North Island in the South has shown excellent form, well able to hold its own against representatives of the Southern Unions. The South team has not been so successful- although its match . against Wellington on Wednesday suggested that it is improving. The annual schools’ representative match between Wairarapa and Wellington is to be played at the park at 1.30 p.m. After a break of two Saturdays the cup fixtures are to be resumed today, and a considerable number of enthusiasts from .the city is expected to travel to Petone to see the _ subhrban team do battle with Athletic. There has been much talk as to tho merits of the two teams, the general opinion being that Athletic may win with their strong forward division ; they cannot hope to win with their backs against such a combination as Nunn, McKenzie, Rarasden, Ryan, and Co. Oriental and Melrose also meet at Petone, and tho former team may be fully extended to maintain its position. A special non-stop train will leave Bambton at 2.30, reaching Pctouc in time for the commencement of the games.
