STRIKE SUICIDE

CAPTAIN FEARED HE WOULD BE CALLED A “BLACKLEG.”

Fearing that strikers were coming on board to* judge him as a blackleg, the captain of the barge June, it was stated at an inquest at Isleworth (Eng;), last month, cut his throat.

By name Augustus , William Jarrett, he was, said the mate, to have, taken the barge Juno to Colchester with a cargo of ice, which, ho said, ho had the permission of the strikers to move, as it was destined for a hospital. Then there was a secret order to take it to Isleworth, and Jarrett began to get worried. On the journey ho received information ■ that “somebody was coming on board that night/' and that made him seem more queer; ' The owner of the barge said Jarrett thought he was considered a “blackleg," and when he heard that “somebody was going on board" he feared the strikers.

A verdict of "Suicide while of unsound inind" was returned.
