CONTRACT ABANDONED

WANGANUI NOT TO HAVE A NEW

; BRIDGE. "BESS ASSOCIATION.

WANGANUI, July 21

It was decided some time ago to construct another bridge across the Wanganui river, and a contract was let. The contractor eventually ceased operations, as he found that tho bottom was too hard to allow of pile-driving. The matter was held up for some weeks until the Public Works Department sent officials to test whether or not piledriving was practicable. Evidently the work cannot be done, as it is understood that all hands were paid off on Saturday.

Much interest is being evinced in future developments.
