ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

(By "Penalty.”) On every occasion when city reserves are not available, and all matches have jK*rforce to be transicrred to -Miramar, lhere is a mix up of some description. La>t week was no exception to the rule, ilit? JJlamomis v. 'Wanderers fixture set down tor Huppa street was postponed. It appears, witn two exceptions, the Diamond team turned uj> at Duppa street, while seven or eight members of the Wanderers’ team turned up at Miramar. As to tho rot ere©, tho writer has been unable to ascertain, up to the present, which ground he decided to, direct his attention to. It seems to tho writer that those responsible do not give players sufficient notice of tho closing of the city grounds, I and until this is done, th-s muddling will not be remedied. The first Brown shield challenge game is over and Poverty Bay, the challengers, were wry soundly beaten, Canterbury evidently, as the - score, nine goals to two, indicates, took the process of rubbing it in. Whether Canterbury has dono tli is to help to docer ocher aspirants after the shield, or whether Poverty Bay was a much weaker combination than they themselves thought, they are to be congratulated on making tho long journey to Christchurch, and no doubt they have picked up some points from the much older team which will be of some benefit to them in future. The most interesting fixtures this afternoon should be the St. John’s y. Diamonds and V.M.C.A. v. Hospital. In tho first round of the competition the former game was a real good go, and Diamonds, who up till then had not been defeated, were compelled to leave tho field a beaten team. Hospital were in tho first round able to claim a two goals' victory from Y.M.C.A. after a well contorted game. The game should bo worth watching as both sides can play attractive football. It is to be very much regretted that the Otago Football Association. cannot seo its way clear to send a boys' representative team to Wellington this season, as on the two occasions Otago and. ‘Wellington have met, the games have been close, interesting, aud also instructive. The St. Mary’s School team, of Blenheim, arc coming across to play the Marist School team next week. The game should be worth seeing. The donations to enable tho public schools representative team to travel to Blenheim are reported to be coming in all right, and : there is no doubt of the requisite amount being obtained to enable the team to got away. Mr C. K. Dick is to be manager of the team. Mr Joseph Lewis, secretary of the Corinthian Football Club, aud a member of the Wellington Football Association management committee, has been appointed Wanganui's representative on tho council of tho New Zealand Football Association. Tho Swifts third division team has ■withdrawn from the competition. This is to be regretted, especially as the team represents one of the oldest clubs in this city, and it is a club that has done a tremendous amount of good towards fostering the game among the lower grades. Perhaps it is just as well to mention tho fact that tne attendance at the Brow'ii shield match in Christchurch last week was two thousand four hundred, and also that it was the only big game plaved in the Cathedral City, as on account of the sloppy state of tne grounds most of the Rugby and hockey fixtures were postponed. Although tne attendance was large, yet as Canterbury failed to get an enclosed ground and a subscrintion only was levied, the gate cannot be called satisfactory, this only bears out tho argument previously advanced in this column that the sooner the shield changes hands, the better for all concerned. . , The Public Schools League is reported as booming at the present time. In view of the trip of the representative team to Blenheim next 1 riday et or} boy is doing his best to try and obtain a place in. the team. . Since writing the opening remark]., of these notes it has come to the knowledge of tho writer that the Wellington .football Association has appointed its chairman, Mr H. McKeowen, to wait upon the reserves committee or tnc cuj council and endeavour to obtain a more jacisfactory way of notifying players as .0 when city reserves are not available. j.'he matter has been placed in very capable hands, and players can rest assured :hat Mr McKeowen will do his utmost to •oring about an arrangement suitable to ail concerned. , „ That "List of Cautioned Player® again. At a meeting of the ptago lootball Association's management committee held last Monday evening, the referee in a certain second grade match, replying to an inquiry, stated that he had cautioned a player for tripping* The committee resolved that the playor be placed on the "Cautioned List. It strikes on© that this list must be a. rather lengthy document, and it would perhaps be just as well if the New Zealand Council could run its eye over it.
