MEETING- OF COUNCIL. The city council' met last evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr D. McLaren), Councillors Jno. Smith, F. Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, A. E. Atkinson, J. L. McKenzie, J. Fuller, E. Tregear, A. H. Hindmarsh. J. E. Fitzgerald, W. H. P. Barber, G. Shirtcliffe, E. Fletcher, and E. A. Cameron. FINANCE AND PEOPEETY. The finance and property committee recommended : That the Eosenoath Municipal Electors’ Association bo informed in reply to the request made by a deputation trom their association lor improvements at Oriental Bay that the question of improvements at the bay is receiving the consideration of the council. That Sir Kenneth Douglas be informed that the corporation is not responsible for the damage caused by the flooding of the basement of his building at Hunter street. „ ... _ That the proposal of the Kailway Department for au exchange of property at Thorndon Esplanade be agreed to as under: The corporation to give thedepartiiicivt ci *>trip of land 15 ivido from the Esplanade in order to provide access to the railway land lying to the north of the Esplanade, the department to give a corresponding area for garden purposes along the north side of the existing garden, and to pay the cost of altering the fence, shifting and replacing shrubs, etc. That a property owner at Epum street be informed that the corporation is not liable for the damage caused to his property by the failure of certain storm water pipes to take away tho water trom a natural water-course. The report was adopted. TEAMWAYS. Tho tramways committee recommend' 6 That tho KolbFrno Tramway •Company be informed that the council cannot see their way to supply them with electrical power at the present time. That tho resolution passed by tho council on June 13th, imposing a penalty of .£lO on Messrs Stewart Timber Company for late fulfilment of their contract jof the supply of cross arms bo rescinded, and that tho penalty bo reduced to £5. . . , Tho report "was adopted. PUBLIC HEALTH. The abattoirs and public health committee recommended:— . , That the Master Butchers union bo informed, in reply to their request for a reduction in. tho charge for cleaning tripes, that the council cannot see their way to accede to such request. That the fencing of the paddock at the abattoir be carried out, and that the adjoining owners be called upon to pay their share of tho cost in accordance with the provisions of the Act. . That an additional room be erected at the caretaker’s cottage at the abattoir, and that the city engineer be authorised to have tho work proceeded with, ihe estimated cost is >£7o. , , , That an ott'al platform be constructed at the abattoir, as recommended by the city engineer. The committee reported that it had received a deputation from tho Wellington' Master Butchers’ Union, who ash; ed that the contents of the paunches oi slaughtered stock bo emptied mtci the abattoir drain. The committee could not recommend this procedure, and recommended tha-; the master butchers be informed that tho council cannot see its way to have the contents of the paunchy emptied into a common dram. The report was adopted. ' EESEEVES.

The reserves committee recommended: That the city engineer be authorised to arrange with the director of ordnance for the removal of the Pipitea Point battery to a fite on the Mount Victoria hill, as the site recommended by the director at Kelburno is no, approved. _ That the 'Wellington College governors b© informed that the council cannot uudertake to assist in the clearing of the College Reserve of gorse. The report was adopted. BY-LAWS AND STREET-LIGHTING. The committee recommended: , That three street lamps be erected at Rimu road, Kelburno, at an estimated cost of £l7, _ as recommended by the electrical /engineer. That a lamp be erected in Hay street at the corner of Kilruddon avenue at an estimated cost of .£2, as recommended by the electrical engineer. That permission be granted to an applicant for the erection 'of a motorshed- at Clifton terrace, subject to the applicant obtaining a letter from the owner of the adjacent section, stating that it is not intended to erect a building thereon, aucj also stating _ in writing that in the event of a building being erected, the proposed motor-shed shall be made to comply with the by-law, as recommended by the city engineer. The report was adopted. LEGISLATION COMMITTEE. The legislation committee recommended (and it was agreed): That Messrs young and Tripe lie informed in reply to their application for consent to alter the boundary of certain of Messrs Fuller and Sons’ reclaimed land sections and also to consent for certain rights-

of-way that the council cannot agree te their proposal. OUTLYING DISTEICTS. Tho outlying districts committee recommended : That the petition from owners of property at Hamilton road, Kilbirnie, for permission to erect their fences on the lino of the footpath as constructed, be agreed to on tho following conditions: (a) Each owner of property to pay a nominal rental of 5s per annum for tho use of the land, (b) The owners of property to take tho necessary Steps to mark tho correct boundaries of their properties in a maimer to bo approved by tho city engineer, (c) Tho fences to be set back should tho council at any time so require. That a petitioner for the formation of a track at Sydenham road bo informed that it is not possible to allocate money for tho work on this year’s estimates. That the Hataitai Municipal Electors’ Association bo informed with respect to their request for channeling of certain streets in Hataitai, in accordance with the Report of the city engineer. The committee reported that it had loft tho matter of the formation of a track at Clarence sreet, Vogeltovm, in the hands of tho city engineer to deal with to the best advantage. Clause 1 was allowed to stand over, and the report as amended adopted.
