CHINESE AND OPIUM
RESULT OP A RAID BY POLICE. The sequel to a. raid made by Constables P. Doylo and J. Cummings on promises in Hainiug street on, Priday last was tho appearance of two Chinamen, named Gim Lum and Ah Yub, at the' Magistrate's Court on Saturday. Lum was charged with having smoked opium and with having been in possession of tho drug in a form suitable for smoking., To both these charges ho pleaded guilty. A plea of not guilty was entered by Ah Yub to the charge of having had opium in a smoking form in his possession. Mr P. W. Jackson appeared for both accused. It was contended on Gim Lum’s behalf that ho smoked the opium believing that it would bo a cure for indigestion and various other illnesses from which ho suffered. Constable Doyle stated that when tho place was entered Ah Yub was lying on a mat on the floor. Though not actually in the act of smoking, he was in a dazed condition, and the bowl of a pipe which whs beside him was quite hct. As soon as tho police came into the room tho accused got up as fast as ho could , and jumped into a bed. His Worship (Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) fined Gim Lum £5 on the first charge and £lO for the second offence. He was also ordered to pay court costs. He. Ah Ynb was penalised by a fine of, X 5 and the imposition of costs amounting to 17b 6d.
