Tho owners years ago actually attempted to make this, but owing to want of capital they found tho undertaking too large, and It has now been floated into a small company known as the Thompson Maruia Hydraulic Sluicing Company, Ltd. The ground is ideal for sluicing, and it is stated that gold can bo got In every dish; tho terraces are 350 feet higher than the river, and the stones are round and water-worn. No • timber exists on tho surface, and the river is a proclaimed sludge channel,. so no practical men need bo idle a minute, as big wages are paid, and tho tenders for race-making in half-mil© sections close shortly. Mr C. 8. Beilby, tho woll-known mining engineer, is in charge of the operations of tho company. The directors principally consist of well-known AVollington business men.

The usual daily supplies of locallygrown fruits have been added to during the close of this week -by the arrival of shipments of Californian apples and oranges, together with --a, moderate quantity of Cook Island bananas and a few cases of pineapples. The oranges Irom America wore the first available this season, and arrived with the apples in excellent condition. They are now in course of realisation;, and owing to tho general dearth of this fruit are having keen attention at the sales. Buyers boar in mind that this load may be the last to arrive here before Christmas, and consequently they will have to cater lor their anticipated requirements ■accordingly. The same remarks apply to apples. What few Sydney oranges were available at Thursday’s auctions facedia good demand, realising up to 14s for gin oases, whilst lemons in bushel packages sold, as high as 10s 6d. Summer fruits in , the shape of dark plums, peaches and apricots were also available from the same source, together with watermelons, all of which were keenly sought after by buyers. Only email, lots ot plums have been marketed from local orchards so far, and not any peaches or apricots, consequently we are depending on New South Wales for these varieties of fruit, and this will. bo the case for a week or two yet. Tho bananas from tho Cook Islands are now m course of sale, and the market being bare are selling particularly well. Local lemons have again been in strong demand, and are likely to remain so for some while. POTATOES AND ONIONS.

The present state of the local market for now potatoes is in marked contrast to the position a few days back, when supplies were fully ample, if not in excess of, immediate requirements. At tho present time the market is practically bare, very few hartng arrived from the Auckland province during: the past day or two. No doubt wet weather hoe been responsible for this surcease in the supply. The result has been that what' small quantities were at hand yesterday moraine from* supplying districts nearer at hand, have faced a much improved market, values having advanced from 2a to 5a cwt. la con-

sequence of the scarcity of new potatoes old have come more into prominence, hut as tho demand has been taken off there lately and placed on new there arc w i few of these’ about.
