ELECTION INQUIRY
A MATTER OF COUNTING. RETURNING OFFICER’S ALLEGED ERROR. PBESS ASSOCIATION. WAIMATE, - December ’ 6. An inquiry was commenced to-day before Mr Hutchison, S.M., into alleged informality in the recent election for members of the Waimate hospital committee. There was a tie between Messrs John Bitchena and Alfred Walker. This was decided by lot, and the former was declared elected. • A petition was lodged that tho deputy returning officer at St. Andrew’s booth had not counted one voting paper because the voter had scored out candidates’ names instead of' marking them by a cross. One packet of voting papers being opened, this was found to bo tho case. Mr Walker, therefore, should have been declared elected. Other objections, however, have been, raised, and the inquiry has been adjourned till December 13th.
