A circular letter was received from the Christchurch Education Board asking for support to its proposal that amendments of Acts affecting education boards should bo made only after consultation regarding proposed amendments. Tho communication was published in full recently. " Y r ou won't do any good in that way,” said Mr Aitkon. “ You won't make any effect upon members of Parliament, though I think tho proposal should ho supported.” On 1 Mr Vile's motion, tho proposal was endorsed. REPAIRS AND OTHER WORKS. Plans for alterations and additions to tho Mitchelltown school wore referred to tho wnrks committee. It was decided that temporary accomodation should be leased at Clarevillo during alterations. On the recommendation of tbe works committee tho following repairs, etc., wero authorised: —Dalefield (repairs and blind renewals), Khandallah (concrete floors in shelter sheds), Waiono (porch extension, now tank and minor repairs), Parkvalo (wash-honse). Decisions in respect of various schools were as follow :—Ngaio, proposals for grading were approved; Plimmerton, lease of reserve to bo completed and effect given to the previous recommendation regarding site acquirement; Levin, tho sale of Levin leases (J!56 per annum) was reported'; Mangatainoka, removal of partition in tho - residence to bo permitted as requested by the headmaster; Ekotahuna, application to bo made for house allowance; Whareama, application to be mado for grant for school; To Aro, 'library subsidy of £% 3s Id to be granted ; Normal; subsidy of A lO to bo granted on proceeds of bazaar for school equipment; Lansdowno, subsidy (A 5 6s 8d) to be granted, half cost of fencing. Tho following tenders wero accepted: Clyde Quay (painting, etc.), William (Nicol, AB4; Cross Creek, W. Benton and iSon (wash-houso, drainage, etc.), A 27 10s; Hukanui (repairs, painting, etc.), O. N. Clayton, A 29 17s 6d; Kaiwaiwai, (new Isohool), W. Benton and Son, ASEO; Newman (new latrines, repairs, ■ painting, .etc.), C. E. Cole, ,£29 17s 6(1. NEW SIDE-SCHOOL WANTED. Request for the immediate , erection of a side-school at Hataitat w'as made by a deputation representing the Hataitaiand Xtosonenth Municipal electors' associations. The proposal was that a school .should be provided' to accommodate children up to standard 11., and that it .should bo attached to the Roseneath 'school committee. A petition was Ijutiu from seventy-one residents of Hataitai, representing 120 children under ten years of age. The speakers, Messrs Leigh, Hunt, and Smith, chairman of the Hataitai and Roseneath associations respectively, urged that the side-school was Very badly needed. At present the children had to be sent to tho existing schools along very exposed windy roads, tho result being • that in many cases the younger children W'ero being sent to kindergartens. , ■ The chairman said that their district was in no different position from that of many others. The Board could not put a school at everybody’s door, though it was anxious to provide all the educational facilities it could. The matter was referred to the works committee. WAIEAEAPA SCHOOLS. A letter was received from the department stating that the board’s proposal regarding the new building and district ‘high school at Ekatahuna would be dealt with together. Tho secretary explained ‘that information concerning the_ probable number of proficiency certificate holders who would be eligible for admission to tho secondary department at the .beginning of the year was now being collected for the information of the department. On behalf of tho 1 subcommittee of Wairarapa members who had been deputed to report upon the proposed change of site at Matahiwi, Mr Vile reported: (a) That tho present building was unsuitable for removal, (b) that a new school be erected on a different site, three acres in extent, under offer by tho trustees of tho late Mr. Holmes.—lt was decided to peg out the site and apply to tho Government for funds for tho ereo tion of the new building. It was decided to make application to the department for funds for the immediate erection of new schools at Silverstream. Kahautara, and Aohanga. NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL. Formal application is to be made for tho disestablishment of tho Newtown district high school in accordance 'with tho original conditions of the establish, ment of the school. This action was decided upon in view of the facts that the girls’ college will bo completed next year, and will be able to provide accommodation forall those girls who havoqualified for secondary education in Wellington, and also that the Newtown district high school was established to make room for the girls until the college was enlarged.
