LITERARY SOCIETY
The Wesleyan Literary and Debating Society held an open meeting- last night in tho Wesley Institute buildings, Taranaki street, Mr T, D. Kendall presided, and there was a good attendance of members. Several scenes from Maeterlinck’s symbolic play, "The Blue Bird,” were very creditably read bv Mesdames Bigg and Godfrey, Misses M. and F. Dix, Dawson, C. Smith, and Messrs E. D. Kemsley. G. P. Gapper, E. S. .lames, and E. A. Simpson. ■ Mr W. E. Fuller road an interesting paper, giving a short sketch of the author and a criticism of the play. The full meaning of tho drama was explained, tho purpose being to show the disinterested search of truth through which happiness is obtained. At the close of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was accorded tho readers and the essayist.
