(By "Eileen-’() Dr. Jas. Reid, bouse surgeon of tb© hospital, left ou Monday for a short holiday. Dr. Hatherly is in charge while Dr. Reid is away. The friends of Mr Armstrong, school teacher, Feilding, will he pleased to hear he has quite recovered from his recent illness, aud was to resume his duties on Monday last. When out of hospital he spent some weeks with Mr and Mrs MeCosh, Bpokongaro. Mr and Airs 11. D. Bates returned to Wanganui on Tuesday by tho mail, after six months’ holiday spent in Japan and other parts of the world. Mr Clarke Thompson, of Napier, was in town during tho week, and was present at the conference of the Education Board and school committee on Tuesday evening. Tho booking for the Leidertafel concert (which takes place to-night Wednesday) is very heavy. This is the first concert of tho present season. A very largo meeting took place in the Borough Council Chambers ou Tuesday evening, when the members of tho Education Board mot the various school commitoees to discuss the, arrangements suggested by the board re the new technical college (now nearing completion), aud proposed building of the new infant school. It was thought it would .‘be better not to rush through such important business, and it whs suggested by Mr Brace, chairman of the Wanganui school committee, that those present meet the board again in about a fortnight's time, which was carried. , WANGANUI FOOTBALL CLUB DANCE. Tho second annual dance held by the Wanganui Football Club was held in tho Fire Brigade Hall on Tuesday evening. There wore quite 100 couples present Tho floor was perfect and also the music supplied by Mrs Lockett (piano), Messrs Qum (violin), and Trownson (cornet), while a number of extras were played by ladies present. Tho supper arranged by Mrs langridgo was much enjoyed. The large table being decorated with the club's colours—dark red and black —vases of spring flowers, and palms, and laden with delicious jellies, fruit salads, trifles, savory sandwiches, etc. Mr H. H. Smith (hon secretary) and Mr D, Moore (assistant secretary) aro to be complimented on tho way everything was carried out. Messrs Marshall and D. North over were ILC-’s. Among the ladies present were Mrs Dr. Wall (wife of the president of tho club), who was gowned in pale blue ninon over peau do soi, wide bands of the latter being richly embroidered in self-tone of silk. Mrs Sutherland (Fordell) was in black chiffon taffetas, with cluster of bright scarlet fuchsias on tho corsage.’ Mrs E. Mathieson was also in black chiffon taffetas, banded with insertion. Miss Buchanan looked well in a gown of white silk and ninon, the tunio strapped with wide silver gimp. Miss Hedditch, cremo lace robe over cremo silk; Miss Sutherland, deep ruby velvet with bertha of old lace; Miss Flo Sutherland, white charmeuse, the tunio and fischu edged with silk fringe and wide silk insertion; Miss Lockett, black velvet; Miss Bodley, pale shell pink oriental satin; Miss Meuli, creme merv relieved with silver bugle trimming; Hiss Masters (Auckland), turquoise blue, oriental satin, draped with ninon, and trimmed with rich silver fringe; Miss Foster, white ninon. over silk; Mrs F. Key lon, black silk and insertion gown; Miss Neylon, turquoise blue shantung with vest of lace; Aiks Corliss, pale blue ninon d’ soi; Miss Langridgo, black fisher net over silk; Beachamp, Empire gown of white spot net banded at the neck and slecrves with silver fringe; Miss L. Foster, pale blue ninon over silk; Miss Scott, tangerine silk, with bolero of Paris lace; Miss B. Turner, white fancy muslin; Miss Brown, black sequin net robe over silk; Miss Henery, creme ninon d J soi and silk; Miss Goldsmith, pale lemon satin; Mrs Gifford-Moore, Coronation blue satin richly trimmed in shaded sequin; Nurse Moore, white silk and

ninon; Miss Boyle, forget-me-not bine silk. Among the gentlemen present were Mr J. T. liogan, ALP., Dr. A. E. Wall (president), Mr B. Mathiesou (vice-pre-sident), Messrs Sutherland,. Suitor, 'Burner, Loftus, W Cummins, Lloyd, Lampe, W. Dustin O’Neill H. Smith D- Moore. The St. George's Society (Englishmen) heici their first annual dinner on Tuosday evening at Dustin's, There were between 60 and 70 present. The president, Dr. Hatherly, occupying the chair. Among those present were Mr C. EMackay, Mr J. T. Hogan, M.P., Archdeacon Jacob, Messrs Bcnnifield, Fountain, John Jones (representing Wales), D. Stewart (Scotland), and Power (Ireland), Briggman, Healey, Daniells, House and Shearsby. The many Wellington friends of Mr T. B- Williams (our popular chairman of the Chamber of Commerce) will be sorry to hear he is laid up at his residence, having hurt his leg which he had so badly broken some time ago while motoring in Napier. Mr Williams is president of the Cosmopolitan Club, and on© of our most popular business men, and it is hoped we will see him about again soon. Another gentleman who is lying very ill is Mr Chas Sharpe. He underwent an operation for apendicitis some weeks ago, but on Sunday last had to be again removed to the hospital, other complications having set in. Mr Sharpe is’ well known all along the coast, and is on© of our Wanganui hoys who is liked by all who know him.
