AMERICAN AMBASSADORS

A DEMOCRAT’S CRITICISM. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. WASHINGTON, July 13. During a discussion in the House of Representatives, Mr R. O. Henry (Democrat) criticised the Vice-Regal state assumed in London by the American Ambassador, Mr Whitelaw Reid, and denouncing as undemocratic the habit of appointing only wealthy men to diplomatic posts. ‘ Mr Henry alluded to the story that Mr Hays Hammond, the special American/ envoy at King George’s Coronation, nudged the King at the Foreign Office dinner. He said sarcastically: “At the next Coronation Mr Hammond attended he would be sure to uudge the Queen.” Mr J. Kahn (Republican), replying, defended American Ambassadors against the charge of oxtrava gance. The debate was adjourned.
