Captain Faria, ot tho wrecked steamer Santa Rosa, giving evidence at tho official inquiry at San Francisco, stated that ho.gave orders to b© summoned on deck when reaching Point Arguello- Tho orders wero not complied with. • The fault, apparently, lay with the second mate, who was drowned. when rescuing passengers. The third mate said ho believed the current carried the steamer out of its proper course.
ALLEGED BLACKMAIL PERSECUTION OF EX-MEMBER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, July 13. Henry Marlow and Martha Lystcr have been committed on a charge ol blackmailing Colonel J. R. Bain, who represented tho Egremont Division of Cumberland in the Hous© of Commons from 1900 to 1906. Colonel Bain suffered intolerable persecution for three years in connection with a youthful folly committed thirty-three years ago.
