TO PURGE THE ROLLS

TASK FOR HOUSEHOLDERS FILLING IN THE ELECTORAL CENSUS. To-morrow night householders in tho four centres and some of the adjoining electorates will have to fill in a form reminiscent of the census schedule, only that it has the important difference that nobody under twenty-one years of ago must be taken into account. The information thus obtained by the Electoral Department will bo used for tho purpose of compiling and purging the Parliamentary rolls to bo used at tha next general election, In tho country electorates a house-to-house visitation will be made, commencing next Monday,

There is a difference in connection with the procedure to be adopted in the city and suburban electorates of tho four chief centres of population on the one hand and the country electorates on tho other. In the city electorates a schedule will bo placed iu every household to bo tilled up by the occupier or person in charge of the dwelling, with particulars respecting all tho persons of the age of fwenty-ono years and upwards who slept or abode therein on the night of Sunday, July Bth, together with those travelling or out at work during that night (and not included in any other electoral schedule), and who return to tho dwelling on Monday, July 10th. Tho schedules will bo called for by the enrolment officer on July- XOth, or as soon after as practicable, and electors are required to have the answers written in the proper columns and the documents duly signed. Auy person wilfully refusing or neglecting to fill up, sign, and deliver the schedule, or to answer tho necessary inquiries which the enrolment officers nro authorised and required to make, is Urn l file to a fine of A 5.

In thickly populated parts of country electorates a house-to-nouso visitation will be made by the enrolment officers, who will only require to make one visit. Each officer will carry a field-book in which ho will outer the name of each adult resident. Ho will also carry a copy of the electoral roU to verify existing registration, and to see that enrolled electors arc correctly described in' name, occupation and -, address. New enrolments will bo effected on the spot by the enrolment officer wherever possible, and, fopms of claim for enrolment, with.free envelopes addressed to tho Registrar for the district, will bo left for unenrolled persons absent from tho household at the Time of the enrolment officer s visit, with instructions that the .claims bo completed and posted to tho Registrar without delay , , . , . , It is not proposed to extend the house-to-house visitation to sparsely settled and remote parts of country electorates. Such localities will, however, be provided for oy depositing a copy of the roll, tot getlrer with a supply of enrolment forms, at the nearest post or telegraph office, where a notice will be exhibited drawing attention to the facilities given for on-, rolmcnt. In all such places tho post-i masters will also assist the Registrar* of Electors to have-all qualified persons; enrolled, and also to purge from tho roll the names of electors who have left the district since tho last compilation.
