Charles Cohen, aged twenty, a tram conductor, who fell from the footboard ot a car in motion on Saturday, and was taken to the hospital suffering from concussion of the brain, died this morning. A serious accident befell a young man in Courtenay place yesterday afternoon shortly before 3 o'clock. It appeared that tho man—James Johnson by name—was walking between the kerb and the tramline, going in the same direction as the car —No. 64. When passing the entrance gates of th© Stewart Timber Company the man, according to th© motorman, without any } warning, turned to cross the street and walked right in front of tho car. The emergency brake was applied, but too late to save Johnson from being struck by the apron of the car and knocked down on to the line. The lifeguard, however, threw him clear of th© car, which was travelling at about twelve miles an hour. It is stated that tho gong was sounded, but the man took no notice. Dr Tolhurst attended Johnson, who was found to be suffering from concussion. Letters were found in his pookets, addressed to him, care of the Seamen's Institute. Johnson was removed to the hospital. Michael Lynch, employed by Mr Palmer, contractor. Island Bay, while doing some excavating yesterday, had one of his legs broken above the ankle owing' to a fail of earth coming down on him. Ho was taken to the hospital.
