STUDHOLME COMPETITION
The Studholme test of the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club, conducted in connection with tho egg-laying competition and designed to discover tho best bird, from an all-round point of view, is an altogether admirable idea, but is hardly conducted on as good a basis as it should be. In giving a detailed account of this year's judging, “CrowBlaok," of tho “ Canterbury Times," says that last year's winners (H. M. Bannehr’s White Kooks) were tho choicest of tahlo birds, excellent exhibition fowls, and averaged over 200 eggs per bird in eleven months. Again, the same breeder’s W'hito Bocks (bred from stock purchased by Mr Bannenr from the Burnham Poultry plant of the Department of- Agriculture) were placed first, being awarded 71 out of tho possible 100 points as show specimens, and 19.1 out of the possible 20 points as table specimens. As show specimens one pen of Black Orpingtons did not score a point. In tho White Leghorn section Master B. Wilson (Shirley) secured tho most points. 62. Tho weakness of the test is that the table quality is determined solely on tho poor principle of weight. Thus the grosser a bird the better tho chance it has of winning. Quality does not count.
