NEGLECTED PRINCIPLES
WHAT THE MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM LACKS,
"Neglected Principles • in* Education" was th© subj ect. of • ..an, interesting . and lengthy paper read at the annual meeting of th© New Zealand Secondary Schools Assistants' Association - yesterday by Mr W. A* Kerr, M.A., of the Napier l/oys' High SchboI v staff. 1 lu course of ’-pa-per EMr- KciT said - that'when they considered the question of efficiency in education they should expect to find in an educationVlaigely literary, a fondness Tor the. best” books; in an education professedly scientific, a love, of nature, and in. an education inclusive of art, aesthetic appreciation. Their education now was largely literary, and, to* ©ome extent at least, scientific and aesthetic. Were the products of their schools distinguished by * a fondness for books, .a Iqv© of niattire', aesthetic appreciation ? Not generally, h© contend* ed, and an examination of the reason for this disclosocl, to his mind, a neglect of cardinal principles in education., He reviewed the main points, upon’which these had gradual! v . evolved—mainly because thoso principles were accepted too much as a matter, of coui^s—a somewhat casual regard for, the* conscdentiduk, attention which wds essential to .the . process of education. v If ,it was-important, he said in,conclusion, that, in the materials and methods' of school education, .fundamental principles should not be neglected, it was fathomlessly more important. that its greatest - aim should not be lost' to view. Amid all-the hurry and bustle and eagerness ‘ for success in sports and examinations, 'their efforts'to'quickeiF tho pace in response to the demands of the social organisation, -there • might. be over-train-ing, fca-ced development, and sacrifice of individual well being and happiness. Was anyone prepared to maintain that the larger end of happiness and well-be-ing was consistently regarded amid these clumsy- endeavours -to turn out ail after a set pattern?-
