Tho case for tho Oiwn in connection mflh tho conspiracy charges against Peter Rowling and the four other loaders of tho Newcastle strike having closed, cadi of the aoaused made a statement in their own defence today. Bowling -claimed that ho had never said -a single word to encourage the men Jto strike But had always done his host to keep them working. As to tho conspiracy alleged against him, he said that any action ho had taken was entirely on his own responsibility and without consulting anyone. Brennan., Burns, Lewis and Gray, each disclaimed any conspiracy to bring about a strike, and urged that they had acted innocently on their own 'initiative in carrying out their duties as minors’ officials.
Burns, referring to certain evidence given at tho trial, said that w-hen in replying t'6 a question he advised tho wives and children of the steelworkers to “steal” broad he meant “steel it.” He had Intended this —as it was taken —as a pun.
