STEANGE "STORY TOLD. TO THE MAGISTEATE - THEFT OF MONET ARMITTED.
A boy-thirteen years of age . named Joseph - Henry Burnett': was brought before Mr W. G. Riddell, S;M.,;yesterday morning under somewhat' unusual circumstances. \ j ; \V\ 1 1t appeared from his statement to the Magistrate that he had come from Melbourne by -way of ISydnev to Wellington with the intention "of staying with his grandmother, a- Mrs. Brett, who, he says. keep 3 a baker's "shcra in this: city. But the police "authorities have been unable, to,• find any such bakery, in the city or suburbs. The lad-told the Magistrate that he had been an inmate of the Gordon Institute in Melbourne; but had "been allowed to leave the establishment. His father had placed him in employment. The man who gave him work sent him out one day to pay some bills, but the boy kept the money and did not go back to his employer. He took a railway ticket to Sydney and there tendered _one. of the cheques he admitted having stolen in payment of his. fare across to * Wellington: , He received .a ticket, .but the company was apparently suspicious in regard to the cheque and gave Burnett, no change!, 'pending inquiries,, hut arranged, that if ,the rbill -proved; to be. all right the. change -would' be sent : to; a certain address in Wellington. -, The Magistrate decided to remand the defendant . pending-. further inquiries and he was ordered to remain in the iWeraroa Home until February 25th..- :-::• " ■ ,".• . ■ ' .
