THE APPLE TRADE
OTACIO APPLES. A paragraph is going the rounds of the papers to the eiiect that a Ciisbori.o resident who recently visited the Covent Garden Market, London, was tuld by the representative of a firm that caters for the best English trade in fruit that undoubtedly the best apples received on the market were the Otago apples from New Zealand, which were' always largely sougiit alter. A s a matter of faot no apples from Central Otago havo been on tho Homo market. Some apples from that line fruitgrowing territory were included in one or two experimental shipments some vears back. How the mistake has probably arisen has been by the display of the apples sent Home by the Department of Agriculture for exhibition at tho Franco-British Exhibition and the Imperial International Lxhibytwn, which displays were also shown at the Eoyal Horticultural Society s shows, and by the representative in question seeing these and remarking that the Central Otago apples, by reason oi thenhigh colour—a distinguishing feature of apples from the Teviot districtwould be largely sought after it they were shipped to the London market.
