MEAT VALUES

REMARKABLE FIGURES IN OCTOBER.

According to the Journal of the Board of Agriculture the values of prime New Zealand meat on Home markets during October reached a remarkable level in comparison with tho values ruling for Home-grown. "At that time" (the second week in October), says the "Journal," "good ewo mutton waa only fetching 3Jd and Dutch 4id to sd, against did for best New Zealand frozen. " The position was even more remarkable the following week, a further rise taking place in frozen, and Scotch and English being cheaper than ever, except that ewes rushed up lid per pound, many carcases making [ 7s 6d each more than the previous week. Relative prices in the central market then stood as follows :—British first quality, sid; New Zealand. sd; Dutch, •IJd; Argentine and Australian, 4Jd; and English ewes, per pound. In the last week frozen gave way Jd per pound, while British, advanced Id for prime quality and ewes sold well." AVe know since the above report was written that the advance in frozen meat was not warranted, and that the rise was of only a temporary nature. The figures quoted show, however, that if thoro is a slump in the value of the

frozen article, Home-grown meat is, comparatively speaking, in an equally weak position.
