LABOUR AND POLITICS

EFFECT OF RECENT DISCUSSION. SUGGESTED AMENDMENT OP TRADE UNION RULES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received January 2, 6.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 1. As a result of tho recent decision by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, in the case of Osborne v. the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, against the use of trade union funds for the support of Labour representatives in Parliament, the leaders of the trade unions and the Parliamentary Labour party have decided to recommend an alteration in the definition of a “trade union,” with a vierv of enabling labour organisations to engage in the political activities they have pursued since 1868. It is proposed that such activities shall be mentioned in the rules of each union as part of its declared objects. A circular detailing the proposed amendments has been issued to all local organisations, and a special conference has been summoned to" meet at Newport on February Bth.
