“BY THEIR FRUITS.”
(To ths Editor ’ N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—-Professor Laby is to be - commended for stimulating interest in university matters, and I feel sure popular opinion applauds his zeal even if it does not endorse his arguments. My reading of hie articles has left me unconvinced on one important point —namely, the inefficiency of the present system. The professor Iras established that the system is diffused, but that does not necessarily involve inefficiency. Will the professor tell us whether, in hiis experience, it is the product of our university—the only true criterion, I take. it —which condemns the system, or whether, as would appear from his articles, he bases his condemnation .merely on the fact that its machinery is not modelled on a plan to fit in with his preconceived notions. If the machinery is .not yielding good results the suggestion that it be discarded is worthy of consideration. ‘ But the professor has, as far as I can discover, advanced no evidence that it la not.—l am, etc., ARBUTUS.
