VIEWING THE CORPSE

(To the Editor N.Z. Times.”) Sir,—ln answering the correspondent who criticise? his use of the phrase “dead corpses,” “Amused” has made out a very good case in commendable spirit; but the fact remains that although such phrases were 'correct when, the classical and Biblical examples cited by him were written, they have long since* become obsolete, as any reputable dictionary will prove. Still such a trivial error is quite pardonable and should not have caused such a swash-buckling critic as “Amused -by Amused” to unmask his awful battery. Unfortunately, guns all suffer from the same compliment as the gunner—the spike, and the whole affair becomes more and more amusing, reminding one of that delightful aside in the “Biglow Paper**’ when Birdofredom Saw in refers to “Mr Secondary Bolles,” and Hosea Biglow explains, in a footnote, that “the ignerant creetur means Sekketary.” For my own part I consider that Mr J. F. Fraser • is just as much entitled to run a magic lantern entertainment as Mr 1 Josuih Snooks, or anyone else, and so I cannot find language strong enough to'condemn the malcontent who’, posing as being eupersensitive, endeavours to prevent other people from being comfortably “arrowed.’—l am, etc., TALKING ROUND THE WORLD.
