HUTT VALLEY TRAMWAYS
The Hutt Tramway Board met last evening to consider a report drawn up by the chairman and Mr Hawthorne dealing with the proposals to be submitted to the ratepayers. The report recommends a scheme (already published in the " Times ") which provides for a tramway track at a cost of £BBBO per" mile, a bridge across the Hutt river to cost £SUUO. and the requisite plant for electrical lighting. Tho total estimated cost is £BO,OOO, and tho estimated running costs are as follow : £ Interest on £BO,OOO at 3£ per cent 2,800 Sinking fund at 2 per cent. ... 1,600 Depreciation at 2 per cent. ... 1,600 Traffic expenses ... ... ; ... 5,429 Power-house expenses ... ... 1 620 Total ... ' £13,049 Tho estimated Tevenue is £14,335 showing a credit of £1296. ' The report recommends that a further sum of £SOOO bo raised to purchase the Hutt Park railwav line The board unanimously agreed to adopt the report. It was decided that public meetings be held at Petone and Lower Hutt to place the proposals fully before -the ratepayers, and to clear up some of the existing misconeentions as to the financial aspect. Mr Hawthorne offered the use of the Hutt Town Hall free of charge for the purpose. The first meeting will probably bo held at Petone on tho 15th inst. The board resolved to - ask tho Petone Borough Council to reconsider its protest against the board's proposed acquisition of the Hutt Park railway.
