Down to the reign of Elizabeth, the doe or buck was received solemnly at the steps of the high altar by the Dean and Chapter, wearing elaborate vestments, and crowned with rose garlands. Afterwards each man received fourneneo and their dinner from the Doan, and the keeper who brought the doe was given live shillings and a loaf of bread stamped with the picture of Sit. Paul.
