(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, December 29. , The Fire Brigade met last night, and accorded a welcome to Superintendent Warner, who takes up duties in tho combined position of superintendent of the brigade and secretary to tlie Fire Board on January Ist. Superintendent Tingey presided. Mr Warner said if the men stuck to him and did their 'duty as well as under their old chief lie would ho perfectly satisfied. A very hearty vote ,of thanks was passed to Superintendent Tingey* for his services during the twenty-five years he had held that position.

In the Police Court to-day a man named Charles Startup was charged with wife desertion. He was remand-, ed for eight days. Accused had to find hail—himself in £IOO and - two sureties of £SO each. Mr Andrew Jack, an old resident of this town, but who has been living in Wellington the last few months, has announced his intention of returning to Palmerston in time to contest the Mayoral election in April next, Mr Jack lias aire.i-ciy served a term as borough councillor.
