THE HAWEA ABANDONED

ALL ATTEMPTS TO EEPLOAT PAIL. After a heroic attempt, to wrest the Hawea from the angry surf which beats on the rooks at the entrance to Circymouth, the Union Company has now decided to abandon the vessel. On Friday, although there was a slight range on the Grey bar, the salvage tug Terawhiti went alongside the Hawea and pumped for several hours, but the water gained as fast as it was pumped out. The small tug Westland did some pulling, but failed to move the Hawoa. In regard to the cargo on the Hawea, it is stated that 1300 tons yet remain in the vessel, but to remove this would take nearly a. month, as it would only bo possible to work for a few hours at low water each day. At high tide the cargo is covered by several feet of water. In August last, owing to the Haweaa tail-shaft breaking, the vessel drifted helplessly between Newcastle and Lord Howe Island for nearly a month be-, fore she was able to get along slowly with temporary repairs, and was picked up off the Now South Wales coast. Tho repairs and cost of tho search totalled £SOOO. On tho 30th of last ihonth, the Hawea, with a cargo of white pine timber for Adelaide and Launceston, was attempting to cross outward over the Greymouth bar, when a huge breaker struck her. The vessel’s bow wns swept round, and before she could bo righted she had struck tho rooks on tho north breakwater. The timber on tho Hawea was shipped by Wickes, Ltd, to clients In Adelaide and Launceston, and was insured for invoice value. There was ; 79,000 ft for Launceston and 634.000 ft tor Adelaide. Tlio Hawea ts a steel vessel of 1753 tons gross and 1114 tons net. She was built in 1897 by A. McMillan and Son, Dumbarton.
