The late staff of the Wellington Local' Option Poll Committee assembled at the To Aro Hotel on Saturday night, with' the object of making a presentation tol Mr T. M. Smith, who was organiser in •tho recent campaign. Mr J. Savage was voted to the chair. The presentation took the form of a Gladstone bag, which was suitably inscribed. Various toasts were proposed and honoured, chief amongst which were "Mr Smith” (Mr Bartholomew). "Absent Members" (Mr Smith), nnd "The Committee” (Mr Savage). The proceedings terminated with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.”

Captain George Perriam, one of the old-tuno masters of the clipper ships which took such an important part in Ilia colonisation of New Zealand, returned to Wellington on Saturday in command of tho barque Gladys, owned by Mr Walter Savill, one of the originators of the big Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. Captain Perriam last visited Wellington in charge of the Gladys five or six years ago. He first came to New Zealand, in 1876, and has commanded in turn the Wave Queen, the) barque Loch Nagar, the ship Crusader, and the ship Nelson. Captain Perriam has a very extensive circle of acquaintances who journeyed to Ndw Zealand in tho "sailing ship days." At Timaru on Friday night the Hon. W. Hall-Jones was presented, with a smoker’s companion, containing four silver-mounted pipes and a cigar-holder, and Mrs Hall-Jones was the recipient ot a stand of toilet brushes (in silvermounted ebony), from members of his old election committee and- friends. Mr Hall-Jones, in reply, said he was now going to a change of scene, of work and of environment, and he believed the change would bo beneficial. It would be a very great change. At present he had a staff of about 17,000 men under his control. In London he would have less than thirty. Nevertheless, there was a great deal of work to be don© in London for- the benefit of New Zealand, and ho asked them to believe that the energy that ho had applied to his duties as a Minister hero would be applied to that 'work. (Applause.)
