OBJECTIONS TO REST
PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN, November 5. At a meeting af the Trades and Labour Council to-night tho following resolution was passed:—“That this council enters a protest against the rest in legislation outlined by the Prime Minister in his speech at Palmerston North on October 19th, and is of opinion that some labour laws are in urgent need of radical amendment, notably the Shope anfl Offices Act, which is rendered largely useless by unreasonable exemptions, with tho result that many warehousemen’s clerks and others are being sweated and underpaid. The council also considers legislation is urgently required to further stimulate and foster our local industries by the .adoption of a. ‘Made in New Zealand' brand and compelling manufacturers to label shoddy; also that immediate provision should be made for embodiment of the right-to-work principle in statute law, and that above all Parliament should taka effective means to reduce the cost of living to those who are endeavouring to rear large families on inadequate wages. The council objects to rest in legislation, believing that tho country is entitled to expect progressive legislation and efficient administration from the Government in power.”
