A FIUFMAN INJURED. Tho Fire Brigade had a rather busy time yesterday, numeioiie calls being received during the day. The most serious of the fires occurred about 0 p.m. iu Upland road, Kcdburno, on the Karori side, where a six-roomed two-storied dwelling in the occupation of Mr Louis Martin was totally destroyed. The building bctug on a high situation, the reflection soon from tho city gavo people who had left Koiburno for town some alarm, tho Koiburno tram carrying a continuous stream of residents to the locality. The fire was caused through tho upsetting of v'i lamp. Catching inflammable material, tho flames spread very quickly, and placed tho adjoining houses in very groat danger through the severe gale that was blowing. Tho .Koiburno Volunteer Firo Brigade, under Foreman Darling, did good work, ponding the arrival of tho City Brigade, -and their combined efforts saved tho neighbouring buildings from destruction. Tho house and contents were totally destroyed. It was owned by Air Thurston, who resides in tho country. Alien and Moore, Manners ■street, are tho agents. After tho firo had boon subdued, the wind, increasing in force, blow down one of tho chimneys, injuring Fireman C. 8.. Heberts, for whom medical aid had to bo summoned. It was found that tho muscles of his back are injured, but not seriously. SBUTAUVNEIDUS GAULS. Two calls came to the Brigade simultaneously at 6.55 p.m. One was to a two-storied lodging house, 80 Taranaki street, occupied by Mrs Mary Cohon. A lighted candle canio into contact with a window curtain in one of tho bedrooms, causing some commotion. but tho fire was got under before the arrival of tho Brigade. Very little damage was done. Tho other alarm at the samo time was from Tina,kori\ road. An unoccnPjpd shod, adjoining a schoolroom in Kilminster avenue, was partially destroyed. Tho cause of the fire is unknown. The building belongs to Mr James Kilminster. of Belmont. Tho Brigade was also called to attend a Tire which occurred at 11 a.m. in rVvijnn-o terrace, in a house occupied by Mr J. C. Gaffery and owned by Mrs Lynn. With the aid of the chemical engine, tho fir© was suppressed before much damage was done. PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE. September 14. A five-roomed cottage at Wbafaupoko was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. It was owned by Mr Stafford, and occupied by Mr Nocross. The latter's furniture and effects were insured for dT2SO in the Ocean office. The insurance on Mr Stafford's house was .£450 in the London and Lancashire office.
