LOWER VALLEY NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FEATHERSTON, September U. Tho mortal remains of the late Mrs George Groathead, of Carterton, were laid to rest in the Clarevillc Cemetery yesterday afternoon in tho presence of a sympathetic gathering of mourners. The casket, which was covered with manyfloral emblems, was conveyed from the deceased’s late residence to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where service was held, and from there to its last resting place. The Rev. Father Bowe officiated at the grave. It has been arranged to celebrate the first jubilee of the Wellington Diocese by a choral service in the Wairarapa on tlio 29th instant. Tho service will be held in St. Matthew’s Church, Masterton, and all the clergymen of the Wairarapa will take part. The Carterton choir is making preparations to assist.
Nows comes from Foxton of the demise of Mrs Webley, at the age of twenty-five years. Deceased, who was a niece of Mr J. A. Hudson, of Carterton, leaves a husband and an infant. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved ones. St. Mark’s Sunday school, Carterton, is arranging to hold its annual concert in November. The proceeds are to be devoted to procuring prizes for the children
Ideal weather favoured the Featherston Gun Club on Saturday afternoon, when Ifc held its monthly shoot, four sweeps being fired. The first was a twelve-bird, George Burt winning with a score of 24, being twelve short of the possible. H. Jensen was second with 22, and J. S. Taurenson (18) third. The next, of twelve birds, was won by T. Skipage, with a score of 24, H. Jensen and J. Laurenson, 23 each, dividing the second and third stakes. The third sweep was six birds, and fell to T. Skipage, with 15 out of 18, 11. Beckett, 11, being next with H. Jensen, 10, third. J. S. Laurenson won the fourth with 35. T. Skipage and M. Hyland, 11 each, tied for second place, and in the shoot-off Hyland won. A double rise was won by 11. Beckett. Much interest was centred in the Rugby contest at Carterton on Saturday afternoon, when the local seniors, this year’s championship winners, mot the Konim team, holders of the Bush champirnship. The contest resulted in a decisive win for the home team, who ran their score up to 33 points, while their opponents failed to score Next Thursday the Rover seniors, Wairn.rapa Thurs-’ day champions, will meet the Konini team on their own ground, when an interesting tussle should ensue. "Martinborongh’a getting more like I.ondon every day/’ remarked a wellknown business man to the writer yesterday. "And so are tho rates!” said another. A few years back his rate bill was bCt, and now it has-sprung to £ lO. Rates grow with the town. The offer of Messrs Guthrie, Brown and Co., of Wellington, of *£l2o for the assets in the bankrupt estate of William Roland Cook, painter, of Carterton, has been accepted by the creditors. Thp bankrupt was complimented upon the satisfactory state of his books and his straightforward statement, and has been recommended for his discharge.
