HOW TO RUN A TOTE.

Whether the method of running a totalisator explained at the Wellington, N.S.W., Race Club’s last meeting is legal, as is claimed, remains for the police to express an opinion on if it is put into operation. According to legal, advice the club committee may appoint three or four members to wager with members; in fact to act as bookmakers. Two separate books are run —one for 5« and the other for M. When a wager is made, the backer is given a numbered ticket with S.P. (starting price) to ill or ss, as the case may be, and the number is entered in a column opposite the name of the horse backed. When betting stops, the total money wagered is added up. 10 per cent, deducted, and the net amount; is divided by the number of wagers on each horse, which gives the starting price for each on which the wagers are paid.
