DEPARTMENTAL PICNIC
A combined picnic was held at pay's Bar yesterday by the employees of the Bailways, Land and Income Tax, and Advances to Settlers Departments. A very large crowd attended, and tne ferry boats to and from the Bay were racked all day. A complete programme of sports and competitions was carried out, and resulted as follows: — Single Hen's Championship—Robertson 1, Alpe 2, Henderson 3. Sack Race—Fama 1. ■ , Three-legged Race —Hill and Shelley *• Single Ladies’ Race —Miss D. Dorner Wheelbarrow Race—Richards and Wellings 1, ‘ 4 , , . , , Relay Race (half a mile)—Advances to Settlers team 1. Tug-of-war Railways Department team X. Married Men's Championship—Skelley 1, Wellings 2. . . , Swimming Race (50yds)—AIpe 1, McAlister 2, Ronayne 3. An inter-departmental tennis tournament was won by the Railway Department, which beat the Tax Department by 5 games to 4. A couple of cricket matches were played between junior and senior teams from each department. The senior game was won by the Tax Department by -164 runs to 71. For the winners McLennan made 33, Miller not out 46, and Leys 11, while Charlton 14, Porteous 16, and A. Wilson 11 batted best for Railways., NaSh took 7 wickets for. the losers' at a cost of 55 runs. junior game was won by the Railway Department by 88 runs to 34. Ryan 16, Miller 16, and Jones 13 contributed most runs for the victors, while Hill 14, was the mainstay of the losers. Miller, 5 for 18, and McGovern, 5 for 16, were the best bowlers for Railways.
