NORTHERN MINES.
TALISMAN AND WAIHI. Mr Drank Reed, inspecting engineer to the Mines Department, has returned, with Mr EL A. Gordon, from an official visit to the Auckland district. Speaking to a reporter of the "New Zealand Times," Mr Reed stated that the most important feature that had attracted his attention during the visit was in connection with the two_ groat ore-producing mines, the Waihi and Talisman. Both of these mines are now working the most extensive ore-beds they have ever encountered, both being in the lowest levels .of the mines. In the Waihi an immense shoot of sulphide ore has been exposed in the 800 ft level, and in the Talisman mine very rich ground is being worked between the tyouth and thirteenth levels, which occur at a depth of 1700 ft. These occurrences are most satisfactory as indicating that the quartz reefs of the Dominion maintain their values at a great depth. At the Waihi min© a magnificent Crossley' gasproducing plant, of 1000 horse-power, has just been installed in the Waikino for working the tube mills. During the short time it has been in operation it has already effected a great economy in the use of fuel. The Talisman mine, under the able management of Mr Stan sfield, has developed into an excellent property. Mr Reed also inspected the coal measures which are being worked by the Tanpiri Coal Company and the Taupiri West Company. The prospects of the Waikato coalfields he considers to be extremely bright.
