LATEST TELEGRAMS. rHESS ASSOCIATION. A DISHONOURED CHBQUD. DAMAGES AGAINST A BANK. AUCKLAND, December 8. At the Supremo Court to-day a claims for .£I2OO damages was made by Charles Augustus Watson, a gum merchant, against tho National Bank of Now Zealand, in respect of a cheque for JC3OO ss, which w-as returned to tho payoo dishonoured. Plaintiff, who had recently started in business as a gum merchant, after haw iug been employed in charge of Mr A, Nathan’s business for over twenty yeant! in a similar capacity, gave a cheque to a Mr Millar. Tho cheque was duly presented by Mr Millar and dishonoured by the bank. On the date tho cheque was issued (a Friday) plaintiff left town, returning on tho following Monday. Plaintiff had sufficient money to his credit at the bank at the time to meet tho cheque, and , the fact of its being dishonoured was a mistake on the part of the bank, Tho plaintiff claimed that, in consequence of the bank's action, his credit had been impaired and his business practically ruined. The jury returned a verdict for JIM damages., . ■

At the sitting of the Land Commission this morning, Mr Bees wrought under the notice of tho Chief Justice the insufficiency of the Supreme Court Buildings. Ho said when the Supremo Court or other Court was sitting tho Police and Stipendiary Magistrate's Court sittings had to be hold in the public office or jury-room. The Law Society had made representations on the matter. Tho Chief Justice said ho would look into, the matter.

At a meeting of .the Shipwreck Relief Society to-day, it wan decided to vote tho sum of £St per man to the crew of the wrecked barqno Dundoriald, with .£1 additional to each officer, this donation to supersede tho emergency offer of JS2S previously made. .

IMPRISONED FOR DAMAGING CARGO.

DUNEDIN, December 5. At Port ; Chalmers to-day, Thome* Scott (engine-room . storekeeper) and Richard Wccdon (greaser), both employed on the steamer Koikoura, were sentenced to six months', imprisonment on a charge of unlawfully entering the ship's hold and damaging <cargo. The evidence showed that accused were found in the hold, and that they broke open one case containing feeding-bottles, also that they, endangered the safety of the ship by taking a naked light into the hold, where a quantity of explosives was stored.

THE PIAKO , SWAMP. AUCKLAND, December 1 S.

Interviewed' to-day as to the 'progress of the Piako swamp drainage works,, Sir Joseph Ward stated that there are fifty men how employed 1 cutting channels ana drains. Two specially-constructed Priestman dredgers have boon cabled for to England to cut a channel fifteen miles from the mouth of the Piako to the Waitakamru, and the works will bo energetically pushed on under the supervision. of Mr Brakill, who is in. charge of the works., "When this work is completed, I hope and believe," said Sir Joseph, "that the swamp will be turned into some of the best land available in the province."

GREYMOUTH HARBOUR. . GREYMOUTH. December 3. At the Harbour Board meeting to-day the tender of Simons ana Co., Limited, of Renfrew, Scotland, was accepted for a stern-well dredger, to be used in connection with the lagoon docks construction. The. dredger is to be delivered in Greymouth In twelve months. It was decided to call for applications for an engineer in the Dominion, to go Home end supervise the work, members holding that Home supervision is not always satisfactory.

A VETERINARY CHAIR. DUNEDIN, December 3Xn the course of a speech at Milton it* day, the Hon. R. McNab referred to the agitation for the establishment of, a veterinary chair in connection,with.Dunedin College. He recognised'the ouea» tion of the development of. agriculture, as being of {paramount importance, and he was prepared to give the proposal referred to full support. All students that might go through this branch of the college for years to com© would bo absorbed by the Agricultural Department, as inspectors, etc.
