A TERRIFIC EXPLOSION
' ESCAPE OP GAS. PRESS ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN', September 12. An escape of-gas, presumably the result of a broken main, led to a rather serious explosion in a house in Hanover street this afternoon. A smell of gas In the neighbourhood had been very pronounced since Saturday, and yesterday afternoon was almost overwhelming. Gas must have escaped from the main into an old water-sewer, and then found its way through the drain-pipe into th' kitchen, where a fire was burning. The result was a terrific explosion, almost filling the room with flame. Tin kitchen was set ablaze, but the fire was eventually extinguished. There was one woman in the room at the time. The force of the explosion was concentrated to one spot, otherwise the result would ha\e been disastrous. When workmen weie set to work to locate the leak the striking of a stone by a pick-axe caused a spark, and ignited the gas in the sewer, flames shooting up through a man-hole. The outburst was, however, only a temporary one.
