A SEDDON MEMORIAL.

PUBLIC MEETING TO-NIGHT.

A meeting, to be presided over by the Mayor, will he held in the Town Hall Concert Boom to-night for the purpose of considering the question of a memorial to tlxo late Bight Hon. R. J. Seddon. Despite the well-intentioned efforts of the men of Lancashire who held a meeting last evening to consider the proposition to sot up a scholarship endowment in memory of the late Premier, it appears that the task they set themselves is not meeting with the response that was expected. There oere only thirteen present. After the lack of enthusiasm at their project had been commented upon, it was decided that the meeting be adjourned sine die. It was pointed out by one speaker that the lack of support might he attributable to the fact that his Uoreliip the Mayor had called a public meeting with a view to raising a memorial to the late Mr Soddon, and possibly the support that would have been given to the Lancashire proposal would be diverted to the larger scheme.

MEMORIAL LIGHTHOUSES. (To the K Alter “N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —May I suggest, through the medium oi your widely-read paper, that a most practical form of memorial to the Tate Premier would be tho erection of lighthouses on points of the New Zealand coast where they are at preset, urgently needed. Mr Seddon himself was an eminently practical man. The Now Zealand pubf.c are a travelling public, and as most of. their travelling is done by water, I feel sure they would give generously to any fund having for its object the increase of safety to life and ship. A national subscripnlon would go a long way to cover the expense ol such a grand tribute to the great man, and doubtless many outsiders would help. Masters of coasting boats, as well as of ocean-going vessels, will agree with mo that lignts are urgently needed on such places as Three Kings, North Capo, Cape Brett, Castlepoint, and the Kaikoura peninsula. I make the suggestion, hoping that abler heads than mine may take up the idea and bring it to a practical working. —l am, etc., THBOPHILUS TROTTER, Master s.e. ludralema. Port Chalmers, d uly Bth.
