Two councillors are to be elected for the Porirua riding, and one for each of the others. The election is to take place on Wednesday next. In connection with the Hutt County election, some forty or fifty ratepayers met at the Oddfellows' Halt last night to hear the views of two of the candidates Messrs E. Allen and P. T. Moore. The chair was occupied by Mr Earp. Mr Allen said the Petone-Onslow road needed more attention than it was getting. He criticised the action of the County Council in purchasing the stonecrusher and traction engine. He considered the ratepayers were too heavily taxed. Mr Moore criticised the county bal-ance-sheet, particularly in regard to the receipts from the Porirua riding, and ! the expenditure thereon. The former, he declared, largely exceeded the latter. Ho considered the present financial position of tho county to be most unsatisfactory. His and Mr Allen’s platform was reduction of , taxation, expenditure of riding revenue in the riding, an improved system of roadmaintenance, and tho . contract system where possible, an annual statement to tho ratepayers shelving the financial position of each riding, placing of the Petone-Onslow road, under the Hutt Road Board’s control. Mr G. Brown will address the electors at Upper Hutt to-morrow evening.
