STANFORD MERTHYR FIRE.
THE MANAGER’S SUSPICIONS. SYDNEY, November 2. Smoko lias ceased to issue from tho Stanford Merthyr mine, in West Maitland, and the management is hopeful that the damage is not so serious as was at first anticipated. Tho manager is strongly of the opinion, that the mine was deliberatelyset on fire, and has offered a reward of £3OO for the conviction of tho guilty person or persons. This action has caused a great sensation in tho district. A COLLIER ARRESTED. CHARGED WITH CAUSING THE FERE. (Received November 3. 1.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, November 2. There is a sensational development in connection with the fire last Sunday at the Stanford Merthyr mine. A labourer named Charles Liback, employed in tho colliery, has been arrested on a charge of maliciously setting fire to tho mine. Liback was confronted by witnesses who alleged that he had told them he was in the colliery shortly before the fire. Liback denied having said so, declaring that he wap in bed, drunk, during tho whole of the night of the fire.
